The TBAYS Keeper Akademy

a program designed to fill one of the biggest voids in youth soccer…the training of goalkeepers.

Arguably the most technically and emotionally demanding position on the pitch, goalkeepers are all too often left to figure out on their own how to keep the ball out of the net. Equally urgent, many keepers are instructed by coaches completely unfamiliar with the art of goalkeeping, therefore lending to bad habits that likely lead to more goals than saves.

TBAYS recognizes the need to give budding and experienced keepers alike the skill set and the confidence to stand tall in the one place everyone is gunning for…the goal!

The Akademy program is a development oriented training system. A progressive system designed to continue goalkeepers through the developmental stages based on age, level of play and commitment to the craft.

The Akademy will approach training in three ways:

1)      Youth training

a)      Youth Training will consist of age appropriate technical and tactical developmental        instruction.

b)      Training sessions will be held or at least designed by a licensed goalkeeper coach.

c)      Youth training will be held in all seasons of play including winter indoor sessions.

d)      Groups of keepers within age groups will be encouraged to train together.

2)      Training coaches

a)      Coaches will assist the trainer in goalkeeper training sessions so as to be able to observe training methods and topics.

b)      Coaches will receive personal instruction on what and how to teach their goalkeepers.

3)      Web site support listing training activities and technical guidance

a)      Training sessions will appear on the TBAYS website to allow for reference by coaches.

b)      Briefs will be posted to the website to assist in training topics.

c)      Technical breakdowns will be provided to help in understanding what and why.

With so many facets of the game depending on quality goalkeeping, it is imperative we begin developing them early and in mass. Soccer will always have goalkeepers, therefore Youth, Select and High School programs are always going to need trained goalkeepers. It is the intention of the TBAYS Keeper Akademy to assist in this endeavor.
