Club Teams
Club teams are gender specific teams ages
U13-U19 which are formed on a first-come first-served basis without tryouts.
Club team coaches are expected to allocate fair
playing time to all rostered players. Club teams do NOT remain intact
from season to season. In multiple team age groups, teams of balanced
strength will be formed by rating players and randomly distributing players
of each rating level to teams within that age group. New players are added
to teams according to available roster space and registration date.
Under-age players may request to "play up" in an older age group; however,
all players are encouraged to play at their own age level unless extenuating
circumstances exist or unless the older team needs additional numbers to
complete a reasonable sized roster.
Teams are limited to 18 players (for U13 and older teams).
After club teams are formed, players are taken on the basis of registration
date, and late registrants over the 18-player limit are wait-listed until
vacancies occur or sufficient additional players of that age sign up to
allow formation of another team. In some cases, players may be given the
option of playing in a higher age group if there is room, but in no case is
an older player (who timely registers) bumped from his/her rightful age
group by a younger player. Registered players who are wait-listed may, at
the discretion of a coach, be allowed to practice with and guest play for an
age appropriate team on an as needed basis.
All TBAYS registered club level players may try out for a select team
in their age group or older. Tryouts are scheduled so that players can try
out for teams in more than one age group, but must be genuinely willing to
play for whichever team they might be chosen for. Select teams play in
tougher brackets at tournaments, and usually require a higher level of
commitment from players and their families (e.g. more travel to tournaments,
more practices, higher costs, etc.) than do club teams. Select team
players will not necessarily get equal playing time in games.
Team organization
Teams are formed prior to the start of the fall season. Each team has at
least one coach, a business manager and a parent liaison. The business
manager is normally a parent volunteer who handles administrative duties
such as tournament applications, fee collection, lodging arrangements for
tournaments, and some team communication. The parent liaison helps the coach
and business manager with parental concerns and communication.
Soon after teams are formed, the coach will call a team
meeting. The meeting includes parents and is directed toward planning the
upcoming season. At this time the coach may ask for volunteers to be the
team's business manager and liaison. This meeting will determine which
tournaments the team wants to attend, establish details such as team name,
uniforms, practice days & location, etc. Coaches are encouraged to involve
all players and parents in making these important decisions. After the
season plan is established, business managers obtain and prepare the
tournament applications promptly, as some tournaments fill up very early.
All TBAYS teams are
required to administer their own finances (i.e. maintain player accounts,
collect and disburse funds, etc.). Guidance for handling team finances is
included in the "Business Manager's Guidelines" (available at
www.tbays.org, or from the TBAYS office).
